From an early age, David had a fascination for communications fuelled by his father, an RAF Sergeant specialising in signals intelligence. David started his first comms related business at 16 with £70, and a few years later, he sold it and went travelling on the money. Living in places like the Middle East and Africa gave him a unique opportunity to immerse himself in local communities, listening and connecting to locals. On his return to the UK, he won a bursary to study with the BBC as a trainee journalist where he learnt the art of finding and telling other people’s stories through broadcast.
After working on the Radio Caroline boat and BBC Greater London Radio, David moved to the UK’s first independent production company where he began writing and producing content for clients including MTV, Virgin and the BBC. In 1997, David joined Kiss FM, a small dance music radio station in London. He used the power of stories to capture the imagination of the youth market. The content went viral, the audience tripled, and David won a whole lot of awards, including a Sony Gold Award, MOBO and was championed by The Guardian newspaper.
After training at D&AD, David enjoyed a brief spell of writing content for TV ads, after which he took a role at an international B2B technology marketing agency working creatively across global brands including Microsoft, Google, 3M and Dell, picking up some major industry awards along the way. As executive creative director, he led the agency in understanding the role that story plays in brand marketing. As data and technology became more prevalent in marketing, he began to use stories to bring meaning to data and to enhance the customer journey.
In 2011, David started The Infographics Factory, a business that employs story techniques to make complex information easier to understand. Three years later David joined forces with a previous agency colleague, Harvey Steed, and together they established HarveyDavid, a B2B marketing communications agency helping companies of all sizes overcome business transformation challenges and communicate the change to various stakeholders.
David has worked with senior board members in companies including Google, BAE Systems, Ricoh, Spirent, ASDA, Lloyds Banking Group, Mothercare, NHS Manchester care and many others to solve problems, spot innovative opportunities, and articulate change clearly to ensure the required outcome.
He is the author of three business books, available to buy on Amazon UK. He has given talks at TED, SXSW, The Prince’s Trust, keynote speeches at client conferences and Microsoft and Google campuses. Over the years, he has had the privilege of delivering programmes for the OSCE and DFID, taking him to places such as Macedonia, Nigeria and Ghana.
He enjoys reading about the space where innovation, technology and people come together to create experiences that deliver beyond expectations. David is a Non-Exec Director at tech Innovation company Strange Thoughts and an Honorary Member of the Royal Institute of Navigation. David supports The Inspired Leadership Trust, empowering young women in disadvantaged communities, founded by Leigh and Jonathan-Bowman Perks MBE.
